Ten years have passed since 2004, with the inception of Mahila Samakhya Uttarakhand. In this short period of time, MS Uttarakhand have covered many milestones in its journey which are regflected in its achievements.
In this time span, village Sangha, Cluster Sangha and Mahasangha (at development block level), were formed in the MS Uttarakhand activities covered areas. In some of the Development Blocks of Pauri and Nainital districts, Women Mahasanghas are functioning autonomously. As Mahasanghas are run and managed by Sangha women of respective region, the concept behind formation of Mahasangha is that they will sustain the ideology and activities of Mahila Samakhya after the roll-back of MS activities from their area, as envisaged in Exit policy of program.
The concept of Mahila Samakhya originated from New Education Policy of (1986) which laid out the blueprint with assertive notion to address the limitations existing within society, depriving women and girls to access education. In the same regard ‘Education for Women’s Equality’ also in its mission statement avers that “Education will be used as an agent of basic change in the status of women.” In order to neutralize the accumulated distortions of the past, there will be a well conceived edge in favour of women.
The MS scheme is not a blue print project but lays out a broad framework for programme implementation. It essentially works to bring women together collectively to solve their problems & empower them to address a wide variety of issues themselves. A foundation is laid for empowerment at the grassroots level with the organisation of cohesive Mahila Sanghas (Women’s Collectives), that are committed to collective action to address their own issues. As the Sanghas strengthen & mature they form federations to coordinate activities at block, district and state levels. These federations work as pressure group to solve local issues and create an environment for effective participation of women in social and political activities.
MS Uttarakhand is empowering the women on the same line and spirit.
